Vandoren B♭ Clarinet Mouthpieces

Traditional, Profile 88, 13 Series

Traditional Profile 88

The difference between Profile 88 and Traditional mouthpieces is in the exterior angle of the beak. Therefore, the musician is free to choose the model which suits his purpose in terms of best playing position, easiest sound projection, greatest playing comfort, and the most controllable and precise articulation.

In the UK we find the following mouthpieces very popular, with the B45 and B40 being the most popular orchestral mouthpieces: B45 Traditional, 5RV Profile 88, M30 Traditional

.

13 Series

Vandoren has also developed the 13 Series mouthpiece. Originally designed for American clarinetists, this mouthpiece design lowers the pitch of the clarinet and brings European made instruments that are tuned to A442 down to the US standard pitch of A440.

Vandoren Masters B♭ Clarinet Mouthpiece Vandoren Masters
Vandoren Black Diamond B♭ Clarinet Mouthpiece Vandoren Black Diamond

Black Diamond

The Black Diamond Ebonite mouthpiece features a new internal and external design. These developments offer the musician a full sound, rich in depth and colour, especially in the upper register of the clarinet.

Masters

The Masters mouthpieces feature a specific bore, a new chamber as well as a new exterior design. They are very easy blowing and have exceptional sound and tuning characteristics.

The mouthpieces below are presented in order of tip opening, from smallest to largest.

Mouthpiece Structure

Tip opening: the distance between the reed tip and the end of the mouthpiece. Measured at the tip, typically described as narrow (small), medium or open (large).
Facing: the various dimensions that together are the platform upon which the reed vibrates.
Facing length: the distance over which the reed flexes during vibration, typically described as short, medium or long.
Baffle: the area just behind the reed tip that exerts control upon the airstream, typically described as high (accentuating upper partials in the sound) or low (bringing out lower partials).
Chamber: the space behind the baffle where the sound develops, typically described as small, medium or large.
Throat: the transition between the chamber and the bore.
Bore: the area within the mouthpiece leading into the instrument itself.
Beak: the angle of the 'top' of the mouthpiece and the resting position for the upper teeth. The angle of the beak varies between different manufacturers and a player may feel more comfortable with a higher or lower angle of the beak. For B♭ Clarinet, Vandoren offer a choice.
